iPad: Coming to a Business Near You

In what is sure to become a trend in the near future, ‘Global Mundo Tapas’ in Sydney, Australia has begun presenting their customers with brand new apple iPads when entering their restaurant instead of the typical paper menu. The iPads have a menu app loaded onto them with features that a traditional menu simply couldn’t contain.

I think the fusion of new technology with typical services entrenched in tradition is great. Why does a menu have to be on paper and why does and waiter/waitress have to write down our orders and take it back to the kitchen? With wireless in a restaurant, when you decide what you want to drink or order you now have the option to touch it in to the iPad and you never have to wave over the waiter.

The functions that a restaurant could incorporate into this are also just amazing.

  • Choosing how you want your meat cooked directly on the screen
  • Choosing which sides you would like
  • Offering drink pairings with your meal
  • Each item having a picture and/or recipe included
  • A “please bring me the bill” button
  • And who could forget the Seinfeld inspired “tip calculator” that would be a must.

All in all I think this is a great idea and hope more restaurants forget about the upfront cost and jump on the bandwagon. This could really enhance the customer experience, and when your going out, that’s what it’s all about.
